Funding boost for Southern Highlands community development

Australia will improve the lives of people in nine Southern Highlands communities by delivering K620,308 in grants for health, education and training development projects.

The grants are being provided through the Strongim Pipol Strongim Nesen (SPSN) program, a partnership between the Governments of Australia and PNG that is funded by AusAID.

The Head of Australian Aid in PNG, Stuart Schaefer, said communities wanted better access clean water and sanitation, upgraded or new classrooms and aid posts and training to help women support themselves and their families.

“Communities decided they needed these better services and opportunities for their people, and we are pleased to help turn their plans into reality,” Mr Schaefer said.

“They are taking ownership of their own development and are investing in these projects too by contributing 10 per cent of the total costs.”

Recipients include the Gesege Village Development Committee, which received K73,887 for a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Project in the Nipa-Kutubu District.

The Komoli Community Health Post will build a permanent aid-post building in the Imbonggu District with its K69, 385 grant.

The Southern Highlands Women’s Association for Peace and Development received K54,081 to educate women on farming techniques and income generating opportunities.

The SPSN grants are unique because provincial and district government officers work jointly with local community workers and SPSN staff at all stages of grant development and implementation.

Other grant recipients in the Southern Highlands are:
  • The Catholic Diocese of Mendi which received K72,000 for the Sugu Water Supply Project in Kagua-Erave District.
  • The Longa Kape Elementary School which will build a permanent elementary classroom with its K72,175 grant.
  • The Nipa Central Circuit Fellowship Group from the Nipa-Kutubu District that will invest K64,772 in a sewing and cooking project.
  • The Rawame Pogera Community Group received K71, 345 to carry our renovation to their village Aid Post.

The groups received their grants in a ceremony at the Mendi Diocesan Pastoral Centre in Mendi attended, by SPSN Deputy Program Director Martin Syder and Southern Highlands Administrator Ungia Kembo.
