Wilwil and Ningil Get Clean Water

More than two thousand people in the villages of Wilwil and Ningil in Nuku District, West Sepik Province now have access to clean and safe drinking water and will no longer walk long distances for it.
Two water supply projects, the Wilwil Healthy Island Concept and Ningil No.2, were recently launched on 11 and 12 of August, funded by the Australian Government through the Strongim Pipol Strongim Nesen (SPSN) Program.
Care Taker District Administrator and a member of the Provincial Grants Committee, Conrad Tilau when officially opening the projects said the people of Wilwil and Ningil are very privileged to get this funding from the Australian Government out of the many and must take ownership of these water supply projects.
“The project has a life span and it is now completed and is a service in the community, which you have to take ownership of and look after so that it lasts,” he said.

Aina Kaupa, the Development Coordinator for Momase Region with SPSN said these water supply and sanitation projects will provide clean safe water for the people, including the most marginalised in communities.

“Having water close by also saves time for them to do other domestic chores and also reduces water borne diseases which may result in death,” she said.
She encouraged the communities to continue work in partnership with their Ward, Local Level Government (LLG), and District to further improve the lives of men, women and children in their area.
The Australian Government through SPSN funded the Ningil Project at a total cost of K85,125 whilst the Wilwil Project was funded with K85,149.
SPSN is a partnership between the Governments of Australia and Papua New Guinea with a goal to enable civil society, together with the state and others, to better meet the needs and priorities of men, women and children in communities across PNG.

The Office of the Vice Minister for Inter-Government Relations and Member for Nuku Open during the launch committed K10, 000 each to Wilwil and Ningil for further project extension work.
