Corruption Fighters Workshop

People in the Bogia District of Madang Province can now clearly define what corruption is and how to avoid it. This was evident in the formation of the Bogia Community Coalition Against Corruption recently during the Corruption Fighters Workshop from the 06th to the 09th of October.
36 participants which included 12 women and 24 men clearly understood what corruption was but also achieved a clear realization that they have greater responsibility in minimizing the scourge. Most of the participants were members of various Community Based Organizations (CBO) from all six districts in Madang.
The workshop organised by Transparency International PNG (TIPNG) was to provide participants with tools and ideas in facilitating community participation in upholding accountability hence becoming active citizens.
Most of the participants highlighted that the workshop empowered them to understand social accountability, develop creative ways of raising awareness, understand issues, gain public support on addressing an issue, work with the media, role play on advocacy tactics and draft an advocacy plan.
The introductory part of the workshop looked at the definition of corruption, various corrupt activities, the context of corruption in Papua New Guinea and the country’s score on the Corruption Perceptions Index, which enabled them to link the lack of development to corruption.
Following a TIPNG anti-corruption mobilization workshop and the establishment of the Bugatti Community Coalition Against Corruption in 2014 in Rai Coast District, other communities in the province have been inspired to create change in their own communities.
The Corruption Fighters Workshop was funded by the Australian Government through the Strongim Pipol Strongim Nesen Program at a total cost of K29,000.
