East New Britain’s Deputy Governor Boniface Sevato, AusAID Representative to East New Britain Province Paul Bridgman, and SPSN Deputy Program Director, Martin Syder officially handed over approved Funding Deeds to the seven successful organisations in Kokopo on 31 Aug 2012.
“East New Britain Province acknowledges the long presence of the AusAID Representative stationed in our province as an importance part of our efforts to operate efficiently and transparently, and I thank AusAID for support through SPSN” said Mr Sevato.
Speaking to the community groups Mr Sevato said “Through these community project grants, you community groups are now partners with the Provincial Government and AusAID in building your communities, economies and families, in line with ENB’s development visions. The best way you can say ‘thank you’ to AusAID is to demonstrate through actions and putting these grants to good use.”
Paul Bridgman said SPSN was not just about grants but partnerships. “Partnerships mean Provinces and local-level governments are responsible for delivering essential services, but they can’t do it without the input and support of community groups, as well as private sector, churches and donors.”
“I want to thank the commitment of East New Britain’s community groups in formulating good proposals to help their communities. And I want to thank the ENB Provincial Government’s commitment to listen to the needs of these community groups and for selecting their projects”, Mr Bridgman said.
Strongim Pipol Strongim Nesen is a democratic governance partnership between the Governments of Papua New Guinea and Australia.
The SPSN grants are unique in Papua New Guinea. All stages of the grant development and implementation process involve provincial and district government officers working jointly with local community workers.
To date, through SPSN, a total 25 small grants have been signed in Oro, Eastern Highlands and Sandaun Provinces. A further 37 are expected to sign in September including groups from Manus, East New Britain, West New Britain and Milne Bay. AusAID will provide K50 million through SPSN in small, medium and large grants over the next two years to assist civil society and Non-Government Organisations deliver community development projects to improve the lives of communities across Papua New Guinea.
SPSN provides grants and builds capacity of individuals and organisations to promote Gender Equality and improve access to health, education and disability services.
