Australia and PNG announced the release of K549,599 to support seven community groups in Sandaun Province under the AusAID-funded Strongim Pipol Strongim Nesen’s (SPSN) small grants scheme on Aug 23, 2012.
The grants will enable these community based organisations to improve access to education and improved health outcomes in the Nuku, Telefomin and the Vanimo Green Districts.
AusAID will provide K50 million through SPSN in small, medium and large grants over the next two years to assist civil society and Non-Government Organisations deliver community development projects to improve the lives of communities across Papua New Guinea.
Strongim Pipol Strongim Nesen is a democratic governance partnership between the Governments of Papua New Guinea and Australia.
The Acting Head of the Australian aid program in PNG, Michelle Lowe said SPSN is working with local governments and community groups to change the lives of men women and children across Papua New Guinea.
“AusAID is pleased to be supporting community-based organisations committed to improving health and education outcomes. Through these grants we are enabling communities to identify and address their own development priorities, including for improved access to water supply, education materials and the promotion of healthy living through sports,” said Ms Lowe.
Sandaun Provincial Administrator Henry Norm said improved education and water supply are usually the basic needs for most communities in the Sandaun Povince and the administration is therefore grateful to the PNG and Australia partnership for realizing this through these grants.
Mr Norm and SPSN Deputy Program Director, Martin Syder officially handed over approved Funding Deeds to the seven successful organisations in Vanimo last week.
“This PNG-Australia partnership program is committed to empowering community based organisations to deliver projects for tangible benefits in Health and Education for men, women and children in Sandaun.” said Mr Syder
Under these grants, AusAID will contribute K79,657 to the Edwaki Station Ward’s contribution of K9,310 for a water supply project and K79,827 to the Telefomin Primary School’s contribution of K29,645 for a school library in Telefomin.
Two more water supply projects will be built in Nuku, with AusAID’s support of K78,913 building on Ningil No 2 Ward’s contribution of K8,441 for the projects. The Wilwil Healthy Islands Concept will receive an additional K78,889 funding to add to the group’s contribution of K6,259.
Vanimo Green will also receive a water supply through AusAID’s K77,768 funding to boost Vanimo Primary school’s K4,712 and the Yako Ward Development Committee’s K5,380 with an additional K75,992 from AusAID.
A further K78,619 will be given to Vanimo Basketball Association’s K6,146 for a coaching and Administration course for the association to continue its community awareness program on healthy living, HIV, family violence and drug and alcohol abuse in Vanimo Green.
The seven organisations are amongst 37 projects expected to sign small grant agreements over August and September. A total of 12 organisations received large grants in May.
The SPSN grants are unique in Papua New Guinea. All stages of the grant development and implementation process involve provincial and district government officers working jointly with local community workers.
A local grants committee, nominated and coordinated by the Sandaun Provincial Administration, screens, selects and approves projects for funding. With the support from SPSN, district government officers with local community workers will collaborate with each community based organisation to monitor and evaluate the impact of its project.
