AUSAID PNG, in demonstrating their commitment to enhance community development, has provided a grant of AU$100,000 (K215, 610.00) to the Papua New Guinea Community Development Workers Association.
The funding made available through the SPSN program was marked with a signing ceremony on Nov 24 attended by AusAID representatives, Leo Kulumbu First Assistant Secretary from the Department for Community Development, 20 government and freelance Community Development Workers.
Mr Kulumbu thanked AusAID for realising the important role CDWs play in ensuring community enhancement projects are delivered in communities and the funding is a boost.
The funding will allow the CDWA to carry out its operations and also provide capacity building for its members.
PNG CDWA was formed in 2010 to establish a Community Development Workers accreditation process which would provide capacity building for provincial officers.
The organisation draws its strength from extensive experience working in all provinces of Papua New Guinea. It currently provides members to work alongside government and community stakeholders in the delivery of SPSN nationwide grants roll out. PNGCDWA is also working with the Madang Provincial Government and SPSN on piloting improved ward planning processes in Bogia District and is also undertaking similar ward planning work in Southern Highlands with the support of the PNG LNG project and the PNG Electoral Support Program, another AusAID funded initiative.
The body is headed by Steven Presto as the President, Priscilla Pius as the Vice President, Marilyn Gairo (Treasurer) and Henry Kavana as Secretary with a growing membership of over 100 community development workers nationwide.
Interested CDWs can join with a registration fee of K100.
