A Task Force made up of representatives from the Government and civil society has been set up to facilitate the development of a National Conflict Policy.

This follows a two day workshop held October 4-5, 2011 in Port Moresby with theme of ”Conflict and Governance: What Works?”

The task force will develop a strategy that assists the design of the national policy.

The workshop provided a forum for more than 30 participants representing the government, civil society and private sector to share experiences and debate with practitioners, researchers, policy makers and community groups regarding conflict management in PNG.

The workshop was a joint initiative of the Government, CSOs and AusAID, facilitated through the SPSN program.

The workshop helped the Department of Prime Minister and National Executive Council research by learning from experiences in addressing ethnic and other conflicts in PNG.

The aim of the conflict and Governance project is to develop a policy framework on how Government at all levels can deal with conflicts.

PMNEC is looking at different types of conflicts and their causes, as well as trying to understand and develop strategies for responding to conflicts, recovery efforts and prevention.
